The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defensive performance in the 2024 season has become a growing concern, and for good reason. While there have been bright spots, such as individual performances from players like Vita Vea and Antoine Winfield Jr., the defense has struggled in critical areas that could jeopardize the team’s playoff hopes if not addressed.
One major issue is their ranking in pass defense. The Bucs are allowing 254 passing yards per game, placing them near the bottom of the league. This is a significant drop from their previous form, making them vulnerable to high-powered offenses. Their inability to consistently pressure quarterbacks and disrupt passing lanes has left their secondary exposed, particularly against teams with strong aerial attacks.
On the ground, things aren’t much better. Tampa Bay’s run defense is ranked 19th, allowing 132 rushing yards per game. This has led to difficulties in controlling the clock and wearing down opponents’ offenses. With teams like the Ravens exploiting this weakness, as seen in their 41-31 victory, opponents are finding it easier to maintain offensive balance and keep the Bucs’ defense on the field.
Perhaps the most alarming statistic is the team’s inability to prevent scoring. They’re ranked 28th in points allowed, giving up 26 points per game. This bend-but-break approach in the red zone has caused frustration, as they allow touchdowns on over 53% of red zone drives, further compounding their defensive woes.
For a team that once prided itself on being a defensive powerhouse, these numbers are alarming. The Buccaneers will need to tighten up their secondary and improve their pass rush if they want to remain competitive. The question now is whether head coach Todd Bowles can adjust his scheme to address these glaring weaknesses, or if Tampa Bay is destined for a mediocre season driven by defensive lapses.
What do you think? Can Bowles fix this defense in time, or are the Bucs in for a long season?
