Addressing the Bucs’ Need for Cornerbacks in the NFL Draft

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers faced a significant challenge last season with their lack of interceptions, a fact that did not sit well with defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. With only seven interceptions in the entire season, it was the lowest number since Bowles joined the team seven years ago. The issue was not just about missed opportunities but rather a lack of pressure from the defense, especially the cornerbacks.

Current Cornerback Situation

One of the key cornerbacks, Carlton Davis, was traded to the Lions last year due to a combination of performance issues and a history of injuries. Jamel Dean, another important player in the secondary, struggled with injuries and only managed to produce one interception. General manager Jason Licht acknowledged Dean’s potential but emphasized the need for improvement.

The Bucs’ lack of depth in the cornerback position became evident during the past season when injuries disrupted the lineup. With Bryce Hall suffering a season-ending injury, the team had to rely on inexperienced players like Josh Hayes, who failed to deliver consistent performances.

Draft Prospects

The upcoming NFL draft presents an opportunity for the Bucs to strengthen their cornerback position. Michigan’s Will Johnson is a top prospect, although he may go early in the draft. Other notable players to watch include Texas’ Jahdae Barron and Ole Miss’ Trey Amos, both of whom have shown great potential in college.

Barron’s versatility and Amos’ leadership qualities make them attractive options for the Bucs. Additionally, players like Nikko Reed from Oregon and Jacob Parrish from Kansas State could provide valuable depth in later rounds of the draft.

Bowles’ Interception Focus

Todd Bowles’ emphasis on interceptions highlights the importance of playmaking ability in the cornerback position. The Bucs need players who can not only cover well but also create turnovers and make game-changing plays.

Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron (7), here celebrating a pick against Colorado State last season, could be a draft target of the Bucs.

Conclusion

The Bucs’ focus on improving their cornerback position in the upcoming draft reflects their commitment to addressing weaknesses in the defense. By targeting players with the ability to generate turnovers and make plays, they hope to strengthen their secondary and enhance their overall performance.
