Chasing Dreams: Benjamin Morrison’s NFL Journey

TAMPA — In his childhood bedroom, a dream board still clings to the wall, showcasing the ambitions Benjamin Morrison crafted for himself.

“A dream is a future you want to happen but has not happened yet,” Morrison explains.

Aspirations Written in White

White letters on a blackboard tell his story, listed in chronological order:

Start as a freshman. Freshman All American. Start a church group. Passion outside of football. Become a two-year starter. Be a player kids dream of. Play my third year as a starter. Declare for the NFL.

He was well on his way, checking off each box as he prepped to be a first-round pick from Notre Dame.

Facing Adversity

The son of former Washington defensive back Darryl Morrison, Benjamin aced his freshman year with six interceptions and added three more as a sophomore. But sometimes, fate and faith clash. Last season, he tore his labrum in his left hip, ending his season prematurely after just six games. This injury threatened to derail his NFL aspirations.

“My faith really helped me through this,” Morrison said during the Bucs’ rookie minicamp. “You can say you’re a Christian until you’re put to the test. When everyone who cheered for you starts criticizing you, that’s when you truly discover your strength. Injuries are part of football, but they’re never planned.”

“Going into the season, I understood I was one of the top corners. Then, boom, injury happens, and you feel forgotten.”

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

If not for a similar injury to his right hip five years ago, which he couldn’t fix until his growth plates developed, that experience might have been devastating. Yet, Morrison’s hard work and belief landed him a second-round spot with the Bucs.

When Bucs general manager Jason Licht called to let him know he’d be drafted, Morrison couldn’t hold back his tears. Coach Todd Bowles, who played alongside his dad in the Redskins secondary, comforted him.

“I’m not going to let you down!” Morrison exclaimed. “Thank you!”

On that Friday, Morrison began his NFL journey without showing any signs of injury, smoothly completing the 90-minute workout.

“It’s good to see him move around,” Bowles commented. “He just needs to get back in shape, but we know where he is long-term.”

Taking Risks and Making Gains

The Bucs are betting on Morrison; they needed to strengthen their cornerback position after injuries undermined previous players. Trading Carlton Davis last year and losing faith in Jamel Dean, who has missed several games recently, drove this decision.

Yet, the Bucs believe this gamble will pay off. Morrison’s unique skill set allows him to excel whether he’s facing the quarterback or not, marking him as a “ball hawk” sought by Bowles.

Determined to Prove Himself

“He has excellent ball skills and awareness, and that’s what makes him special,” Bowles noted. “I’m looking forward to seeing him grow.”

Believing Tampa Bay is his rightful spot, Morrison, now wearing No. 21, is determined to prove the doubters wrong.

“People don’t know what I went through last year—dealing with uncertainty about my hip, the combine, and all of that. It felt like many gave up on me, but I kept fighting,” he admitted.

New Dreams on the Horizon

Morrison now has new goals on his dream board:

Lead the NFL in interceptions. Be named Man of the Year. Make the Pro Bowl multiple times. Win a Super Bowl and earn a Hall of Fame jacket.

If you’re a Bucs fan, it’s hard not to envision him celebrating touchdowns, living the dream that’s a nightmare for his opponents.

“God doesn’t make mistakes,” Morrison said. “I ended up at the right spot. My mom said, ‘You’re on a mission. Go for it!’”

Conclusion

Benjamin Morrison’s story is one of resilience, faith, and determination. As he takes his first steps into the NFL, he’s not just chasing his dreams but actively shaping them amid challenges. With new goals in sight, this young athlete is both an inspiration and a rising star in the football world.
