Former Hillsborough High multi-sport star Steve Kiner, who became one of the greatest college football players from the bay area, passed away at the age of 77. Kiner, a standout at the University of Tennessee, left a lasting legacy in the world of football.

Kiner’s talent was evident early on, as he was named SEC Sophomore of the Year after his freshman season at Tennessee. Known for his tenacity on the field, Kiner earned first-team All-America honors in his final two collegiate seasons. In 1969, Kiner led the Vols to an SEC championship and garnered national recognition for his outstanding performance. His professional career saw him playing for teams like the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Washington Football Team, and Houston Oilers. Kiner’s contributions to the game were duly recognized with inductions into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
