Ji-Man Choi believes his five seasons with the Rays were the highlight of his career, both in terms of success on the field and his bond with the fans.
He hopes to return to the organization someday in a coaching role to deepen his understanding of their approach and share that knowledge in South Korea.
Now 33, Choi has effectively stepped away from major league baseball and is heading back to South Korea. He will start his mandatory military service next week and hopes to play in the Korea Baseball Organization by 2027.
In a recent email with the Tampa Bay Times, Choi reflected on his past and what the future holds:
Looking Back: Five Seasons with the Rays
“My experience with the Rays was unforgettable. Each moment spent with the team, my teammates, and especially the fans was essential to my growth,” Choi revealed.
“I’ve been a part of other great teams, but the Rays felt like family. I want to express my gratitude to Erik Neander and Kevin Cash for believing in me during my time there.”
“I aspire to return as a coach one day to fully immerse myself in the Rays’ baseball philosophy and enhance my game knowledge as I aim for a coaching role in Korea in the future.”
Memorable Moments with the Rays
“I cherish countless moments with the team, especially the excitement when we clinched postseason spots in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. It was all about teamwork and the fantastic support from the fans. I will always remember them.”
Military Service: A New Responsibility
What are your thoughts about starting your military service?
“I’m ready to fulfill my mandatory military service in South Korea. I see it as a chance to gain greater responsibility and patience, along with personal growth. I also plan to maintain my fitness to prepare for my KBO career after service.”
Future Plans: Eyes on the KBO
Are you set on playing in the KBO when you’re eligible for the draft in 2027?
“I can’t make any guarantees at this point. But it would truly be an honor to continue my baseball journey in Korea, so I intend to challenge myself in the KBO.”
Excitement for New Chapters
How excited are you about these new chapters in your career?
“There’s always a bit of fear with new challenges, but I’m also thrilled! I see this as an opportunity to learn and grow even more, and the love from the fans gives me so much strength.”
