TAMPA — Lightning star Nikita Kucherov has secured his spot as one of the top three contenders for the prestigious Hart Trophy, awarded to the player deemed most valuable to their team.
Kucherov’s Impressive Season
This season, Kucherov dominated with an impressive 121 points, marking his second consecutive scoring title and earning him the Art Ross Trophy for the third time in his career. While he outperformed Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon again, it’s worth noting that MacKinnon claimed the Hart Trophy last year, but he’s not among the finalists this time around.
Competition for the Hart Trophy
Joining Kucherov in the final race are Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl, who led the league with 52 goals, and Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. Hellebuyck is a strong favorite for the Vezina Trophy after boasting league-best stats, including 47 wins, a 2.00 goals-against average, and eight shutouts, all contributing to Winnipeg’s impressive record this season.
A Familiar Face
This marks the third occasion Kucherov has been among the top three Hart Trophy finalists, previously winning after the Lightning’s Presidents’ Trophy-winning season in 2018-19. In addition to his scoring prowess, Kucherov notched an impressive 84 assists and set a personal best with nine game-winning goals.
Additional Accolades
On Wednesday, Kucherov was also named a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, given to the league’s outstanding player based on player votes. He also took home this award back in 2018-19.
