ST. PETERSBURG: Tropicana Field Video Board Damaged During Batting Practice
Rays Fall to Astros 3-2
The Tropicana Field video board was rendered inoperable during batting practice on Tuesday after it was reportedly struck by a ball hit by Houston’s Yordan Alvarez. Unfortunately, the Rays’ performance that followed didn’t offer much for fans to cheer about.
Offensive Struggles Continue for the Rays
The Rays’ 3-2 loss to the Astros marks their eighth defeat in the last 11 games, pushing their record below .500 to 59-60 and keeping them at least 5 ½ games behind the third American League wild-card spot. Even with the addition of top prospect Junior Caminero to the lineup, the Rays’ offense continued to falter, managing only two or fewer runs for the tenth time in their last 16 games since the trade deadline.
Lackluster Offensive Performance
The Rays recorded just five hits throughout the night, making it the 13th time in recent games that they’ve been held to single digits in hits. Caminero, who made some strong defensive plays at third base, contributed one hit in four at-bats.
Strong Pitching Outings
Despite their offensive woes, starter Shane Baz delivered a solid performance, pitching a career-high seven innings while allowing three runs on seven hits, with two walks and six strikeouts. Reliever Drew Rasmussen also impressed in his third appearance since returning from his third elbow surgery in seven years.
Game Recap
The Rays took an early lead with Jose Caballero’s hustle resulting in an RBI single by Josh Lowe. However, the Astros quickly responded, tying the game and eventually taking the lead with home runs by Alex Bregman and Jeremy Peña. The Rays had opportunities to close the gap but were unable to capitalize.
Final Thoughts
The Rays’ offensive struggles were evident as they came up short against the Astros. While there were bright spots in the pitching and defensive performances, the team will need to regroup and focus on improving their offensive production to secure more wins going forward.
