USF Spring Game Highlights: QB Byrum Brown’s Injury and Strong Performances
TAMPA — USF’s standout quarterback Byrum Brown was absent from Saturday night’s spring game, but fans shouldn’t be concerned.
Head coach Alex Golesh explained that Brown just “tweaked his hammy” in practice a few days prior.
“If it were a regular season game, he’d be good to go,” Golesh stated. Brown had previously shown solid performance in spring practice, especially since he missed much of last season after suffering a leg injury during a game against Tulane.
“I didn’t want to risk anything in the spring game. He’s had enough practice time, and we were able to focus on other players,” Golesh added.
Archie Steps Up
In stepped Bryce Archie, who took over for Brown last fall and led USF to a respectable 5-3 record, highlighted by a five-overtime victory against San Jose State in the Hawaii Bowl last Christmas Eve.
During Saturday’s game, Archie, who also pitches for the USF baseball team, completed 11 of 18 passes for 97 yards. His positive outlook shone through in his comments about the team.
New Stars Emerge
Archie praised the talented new receivers and running backs, including Alvon Isaac and Charlotte transfer Cartevious Norton, who all contributed significantly.
He also noted the rise of new receivers like Brandon Winton and Kory Pettigrew, who are stepping up to fill the shoes of Sean Atkins, USF’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards.
Freshman QB Shines
Archie also highlighted the impressive performance of freshman quarterback Locklan Hewlett, who completed 13 of 14 passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns during the game.
“Lock really excites me. He’s been incredibly dedicated, often seen in the facility as much as I am,” Archie remarked about Hewlett, who had an outstanding high school career, passing for over 5,000 yards.
Golesh on the Future
Coach Golesh, who has led the Bulls to bowl victories in his first two seasons, emphasized the importance of consistency and discipline as the team aims to elevate their competitive status.
“Closing the gap to become serious contenders will take hard work. But I believe our guys are prepared for this challenge,” Golesh stated while looking ahead to the upcoming match against Boise State on August 28.
Importance of Brown’s Health
Brown’s health is crucial for the team’s success, especially after amassing 4,101 yards in 2023.
Golesh firmly supports his star quarterback, reiterating the idea that a player does not lose his position due to injury.
